Coronavirus Awareness
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. First identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019, it rapidly spread worldwide. By May 2020, millions of cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths were reported globally. The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets from close contact. Symptoms range from mild (fever, cough, fatigue, loss of smell/taste) to severe (shortness of breath, ARDS, organ failure). Most people recover, but some develop serious complications. As of 2025, while much progress has been made in vaccination, treatment, and awareness, new variants of COVID-19 continue to emerge. Health experts emphasize that the pandemic has transitioned into an ongoing public health challenge rather than a one-time crisis. Maintaining hygiene practices, staying informed about booster doses, and recognizing early symptoms remain critical in preventing future outbreaks. Preparedness and awareness are key — especially with the possibility of seasonal surges and variant-driven waves. Continued public education and responsible behavior can help protect individuals and communities in the years ahead.
